Astronomical Club of Santiago announces project


The Astronomical Club of Santiago Inc. launched the project “Scientific education to promote Santiago and the country” with an orientation towards Astronomy, with the support of the Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic. The event took place at the UTESA Dominican Culture and Convention Center and was attended by representatives of both institutions, as well as other related institutions and special guests.

Pablo Miguel Ramírez Ogando, general director of the General Directorate of Community Participation of the Ministry of Education and Juan Josè Mariñez Báez, general director of the Secondary Education Directorate, attended on behalf of the Ministry of Education. Likewise, Agust{in González Morel, director of the Cibao Norte Region of the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development, who spoke brief words assessing the quality of the project that promotes critical thinking, research and the interest in science at the school and general level, within the Dominican population, in order that they can learn and entertain themselves as a family.

Veronica Ortega, president of the Astronomical Club of Santiago He explained that this project aims to expand the social impact that the institution has for our country. The approved subsidy is for an amount of 1.2 million pesos, of which half has been disbursed. The project consists of carrying out activities throughout the year that promote interest in science and Astronomy, the perfect vehicle to introduce people to areas such as Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, History and Technology and inspire young people to want to get involved in these fascinating fields of knowledge.

“The social appropriation of science It is what will make society understand that this is the way to have a developed, conscious and critical thinking country. This is only possible through the popularization of the knowledge obtained through research and transmit scientific rigor with a simple language that can be understood by the population in general. This will mean having people who will be able to broaden their vision of the world, develop their intelligence and open their minds to endless possibilities,” he said.

After the formal part, those present enjoyed the participation of Rafelito Mirabal and Marcos Herrera, who performed a musical selection that fostered social exchange, during which they were able to observe the planets Jupiter and Saturn through a telescope.

The Astronomical Club of Santiago, founded on January 13, 1991, is the oldest group of amateur astronomy in the Dominican Republic. It is a non-profit association in which a group of volunteer members offers, among other activities, video forums and educational talks on astronomy and science in general, constellation demonstrations and observations with telescopes. The Club has the first and only building in the entire country, dedicated to function as an astronomical observatory located in the highest part of the Cerros de Gurabo, with a rooftop viewpoint that offers a beautiful panoramic view of the city of Santiago and the Cordillera Northern.
