Bad smell in personal finance

After a short time in a situation we stop repelling what we initially refuted. A bad smell in a room happens to not disturb, as well as, for example, financing credit cards.

We get used to what is not the best and we remove from our sight what we could have.

Return to the credit card example. Many people who have never had credit cards, or who have never financed them regularly, consider this practice a bad smell. Paying high interest for not paying them on time or not having the full amount to do so is reprehensible. Until they do it for a few months. At that point, it becomes normal.

Did you stop smelling bad? No, the person who started that path let the bad smell be felt.

Even seeing a behavior in society makes some bad odors disappear. Since most do, or at least we think, because we don’t have statistics to prove it, we think it’s fine. If “everyone” buys a vehicle beyond their means with a loan, but does not take a loan to buy their home, we think that it should be so.

Here also comes the saying that says: “Evil of many, consolation of fools.”

We even apply what is called cognitive dissociation. We find excuses that allow us to convince ourselves that we are not able to detect the smell. “It is that there is no other way to live if it is not financing credit cards, everyone does it”.

All the world? We don’t even know if it’s a majority. Much less do we look for the reason for the bad smell to cancel it.

Let’s see, when we finance the card, continuing with the illustrated example, we are paying interest. The amount of money available for the next month will be reduced. And before we said that it was not enough for us to be able to dispose of 100%. The next step will be to look for a strong but pleasant smell that overshadows the one that we do not want to feel. “I’m going to pay the minimum on the card, so I’ll have enough available.”

You see? Cognitive dissociation. I have the perfect excuse, I have not reduced my availability. So I can continue spending the same. Or more, because I discovered that by paying the minimum, I have more money left in my pocket.

Now we will continue using the card and in a short time it will stop smelling bad about paying the minimum. Until we enter the next room. Take another card because the one we have is full. We already perceive the bad smell of the next room. Until we finance it, then we’ll pay you the minimum, then we’ll take another one. In a seemingly distant time, a debt consolidation will be the next unpleasant smell… The circle is closed again and again.

“What can I do, Diego Sosa?”

—Simple, eliminate the source of the bad smell.

If you go to base you won’t have to look for excuses that don’t amount to apologies. The evil of many is consolation for fools. Our money disappears when we don’t use it in the best way. And not letting the smell be identified by our sense of smell and brain is not the solution. In a matter of personal finance that smell destroys our purchasing power and it limits us the construction of our future well-being.

In the case that I illustrated, I would tell you that the second time we finance the card, it is time to reduce expenses. Taking control of my money is essential if I want it to become well-being and not stress.
