Blow for Apple: the iPhone with USB-C will be mandatory after votes of the European Parliament

In the past month of June 2022, the European Union had announced to the public that a consensus had been reached to oblige smartphone manufacturers that in the future the equipment sold in the territory incorporate a universal USB-C charging port. It was a drastic step that was going to condition the existence of iPhones with a lightning connector.

At that time, the change was limited to being an agreement that would have to be voted on by the European Parliament months later, in order to become law. The day has come and it is now known that the deadline for all phones to have a USB Type-C port will be at the end of 2024. In other words, by January 1, 2025 it will not be possible to market devices that have another type of input.

“The new law, approved by the plenary session with 602 votes in favor, 13 against and eight abstentions, is part of an EU effort to reduce electronic waste and empower consumers to make more sustainable decisions. Regardless of their manufacturer, all new mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones and headsets, handheld game consoles and portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems, corded rechargeable headsets and laptops that run on a Power delivery of up to 100 Watts will need to be equipped with a USB Type-C port.

The new arrangement will mainly affect Apple and to your iPhone with lightning port. The purpose of the modification is to reduce the digital footprint of the technology to establish a standard charger that translates into a reduced need for cables and chargers in the production chain.

Finally, it is important to specify that the process has not been completely closed. The European Council will have to ratify the decision of the European Parliament, but in reality it is not projected that any kind of impediment will arise. After that, European countries will have to reflect the new regulations in their parliaments.
