Bullfights are definitively prohibited in Plaza México, the largest in the world

A judge ordered this Friday the definitive suspension of the bullfighting shows in the Mexico Square during the trial that will determine the definitive prohibition or not of the bullfights in the Benito Juárez mayor’s office in Mexico City where the property is located, which means a period of between six months and one year.

The resolution —issued by the first district court for administrative matters in Mexico City— to temporarily ban bullfights in Mexico’s Monumental Plaza, the largest in the world and traditionally considered the most important in the Americas, is a blow without precedents in the history of Mexican bullfighting.

Two weeks ago, the NGO Justicia Justa took the petition to ban bullfights in Plaza México to a federal court, claiming that the Mexican Federal Constitution prohibits animal abuse.

In addition, he demanded the precautionary suspension of the bullfights while the final resolution is determined.

The latter prospered and was ratified, after Judge Rosa Iliana Noriega presented an appeal to suspend the precautionary prohibition of the First District Judge, Jonathan Bass Herrera, considering that “he was ahead of his criteria and did not act with balance by suspending the bullfights of Bulls”.

Two of the three magistrates of the Twenty-Second Collegiate Court in Administrative Matters concluded that the precautionary suspension is appropriate, since the measure favors the right to a healthy environment.

Regarding this consideration, Cristian Daniel Ávila, a lawyer for Bullfighting Mexicana, pointed out that a “healthy environment” and the individual right to culture are opposed, since animal abuse is determined by their different nature.

“A fighting bull is not the same as a pet, so abuse does not mean the same in all species,” Ávila tells EFE.

Plaza México still has 10 days to challenge the granting of the suspension before the Collegiate Circuit Court.

The hierarchical superior court of the judge who ruled the suspension of bullfights will analyze whether the granting of the suspension was carried out in accordance with the law. If he considers not, the suspension will have to be revoked and the bullfights will continue to be allowed to take place.

Plaza México, in an official statement issued this Friday, has already announced that “the company will defer the celebration of scheduled bullfights and bullfights and will continue with the legal defense of Mexican customs and traditions, exhausting all legal instances within its reach, to favor of bullfighting”.

It should be remembered that the measure only affects the Plaza Monumental and that on the outskirts and within Mexico City there are more bullfighting arenas such as Cinco Villas or in the municipality of Texcoco, neighboring the capital, which are enabled to continue offering bullfights. Bulls.
