Gustavo Petro: They denounce that a “soft coup” is underway in Colombia

Ten months have passed since the first left-wing Colombian government, led by the formula Gustavo Petro and Francia Márquez, presides over the nation with a military tradition, with a tendency towards right-wing conservatism. As soon as he could, the reforms of the Historical Pact they were formulated to the Parliament for its discussion. The opposition, reluctant to the changes chosen by 11,281,002 compatriots, placidly awaited the recent audios of the former ambassador Armando Benedetti published per week In the clips, he is heard talking about alleged illicit financing from his past employer in the last elections.

The frustrated right-wing presidential candidate Federico Gutiérrez was the one who denounced Petro in the Commission of Accusations of the House of Representatives. ‘Fico’, as he is known, requested the resignation of the president without having begun the investigations. He breached the presumption of innocence, revealing a preview of opinion that could suggest his intentions.

The judicial position is added to the congressional position. Since January of this year, the president of Colombia has publicly confronted the attorney general, Francisco Barbosa, for having opposed the idea of negotiating with the many armed groups that exist in the country. For Petro, this inaction by the Public Ministry was decisive for the murder of 200 civilians by the Clan del Golfo. Barbosa has said that the government is turning into a “dictatorship.”

That is why more than 400 politicians, trade unionists and intellectuals from around the world have called on the international community – supposedly the promoter of representative democracy – to oppose the “insidious opposition” tactics. Some of the signatories are Rafael Correa, Noam Chomsky, Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, Gleisi Hoffmann, Jeremy Corbyn, Ada Colau, Sandra Pereira, Andrej Hunko and Verónika Mendoza.

In the public letter, they point to the aforementioned prosecutor Barbosa and the attorney general, Margarita Cabello, as those responsible for “actively” targeting the members of the Historical Pact “with investigations that may result in suspension, dismissal and disqualification.”

They also recall that retired generals and colonels have marched in front of the Legislature to invoke a coup against Gustavo Petro, similar to what happened with the past presidency of Peruvian Pedro Castillo.

The complainants use the term “soft coup” in reference to an indirect attack promoted by political, media, executive and judicial sectors that would aim to deny the left to govern the country for the first time.
