Movie fight at Oscar Awards 2023

“All Quiet On the Western Front”, from Germany, and “Argentina, 1985”, from Argentina, are emerging as the two favorite films for the Oscar in the category of best international film in the 95th edition of the awards, but the films of Poland, Ireland and Belgium will fight to turn the predictions around.

The Golden Globe and the Goya award for the film by Santiago Mitre, starring Ricardo Darín, outlined the film “Argentina, 1985” as the possible winner of the international category of the gala of the most popular awards in the film industry .

The legal drama based on the successful trial against the soldiers of the violent Argentine dictatorship (1976-1983), responsible for atrocities and human rights violations, has been warmly received by the public and critics since its premiere at the International Festival of Cinema of Venice.

However, the nine Oscar nominations that the German film by Edward Berger received in January, as well as its recent triumph at the BAFTAs, tipped the balance towards the war film, leaving it as the toughest contender on the list.

At the BAFTAs, “All Quiet On the Western Front” won seven awards: Best Film, Best Direction, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Sound.

The film is nominated for an Oscar in these same categories, except for directing, and adds two more mentions in the sections of best makeup and best visual effects.

justice and war

Miter and Darín received an ovation at the Venice Mostra after presenting the film that follows prosecutors Julio Strassera and Luis Moreno Ocampo in their struggle to obtain justice for the victims of the dictatorship.

What they thought could remain a local anecdote, connected with hundreds of people around the world and became for its creators a banner for the fight for democracy against the rise of authoritarian regimes.

For its part, Berger’s film, based on the homonymous novel by Erich Maria Remarque, recounts the atrocities of the First World War (1914-1918). It is the third time that Remarque’s book has been transferred to the big screen.

The first adaptation, from 1929, won two Oscars in the categories of best film and best direction for the work of Lewis Milestone.

Without making divisions between good and bad, the story closely follows the brutal disappointment that a young man experiences in the field of war after having been excited to be part of the fight for his country.

breaking roles

Although many indications point to the triumph of the mentioned tapes, the film “Close”, by Lukas Dhont, could change the course of the predictions.

It was one of the favorites at the Cannes Film Festival when it received the “Grand Prix”, the second most prestigious prize at the event, and it triumphed at the Chicago, Sydney and Belgium festivals, among others.

The story portrays the end of the pure and loving friendship of two boys after the arrival of adolescence and the prejudices of society around gender roles.

Likewise, the Polish film “EO”, also recognized in Cannes with the jury prize and for its soundtrack, and also winner of the critics’ awards in New York and Los Angeles, aspires to the award.

The story directed by the Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski is a tribute to the film “Au Hasard Balthazar”, by Robert Bresson, and follows the journey that EO, an adorable donkey, undertakes after being forced to separate from his owner, a circus artist.

On its way, the animal will relate differently to the diversity of humans it knows and although it will enjoy life, it will also experience sadness and pain.

The latest contender is “The Quiet Girl,” a film directed by Colm Bairéad that chronicles the childhood of a 9-year-old girl whose parents decide to send her to live with distant middle-aged relatives.

The film based on the novel “Foster”, by Claire Keegan, portrays the first time that the silent girl knows love and affection after her arrival at her relatives’ farm located in County Waterford, on the south coast of Ireland. .

Bairéd’s film won the Berlin Film Festival and became the first Irish-language film to be nominated for an Oscar.

The 95th edition of the awards of the hollywood academy will announce the winners of all categories on March 12 from the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles (USA).
