New York: air quality improves, but environmental alert for smoke from Canada remains

The air quality in New York, United States, showed a considerable improvement during the early hours of this Friday, June 9, according to NY1 meteorologist John Davitt. Despite this positive report, the North American city maintains the environmental alert for the third consecutive day.

The city’s air quality index across all five boroughs was below 100, and the smell of smoke had already dissipated by 5:00 am (local time). However, contamination levels are expected to increase in the afternoon and could exceed alert levels at this time.

“The health and air quality advisory has now been extended until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, June 9. Please continue to limit your outdoor activities and wear a mask,” Mayor Eric Adams reported through his official channels.

According to experts, some rain this afternoon could also help reduce smoke levels in the city. The indices for this Friday will be more similar to a typical summer pollution event in the city, than to the historical event that took place on Wednesday.

In this context, those who are in New York should limit outdoor activities as much as possible and wear masks when walking through the streets. Stephanie Viés, from Los Guardianes del Tiempo, explained that as the day progresses, the air will improve. “The air quality is going to improve, we have already noticed it, the smoke is no longer as thick as Wednesday, but we continue with a high particle level. By tomorrow the air quality should be much better,” she said.
