At the end of October, the Chinese company Oppo presented its first smartphone in our country. This is the Oppo A54, a low-mid-range smartphone that stands out in several aspects such as its triple rear camera and its powerful 5,000 mAh battery.
Thanks to Oppo Peru, we were testing this device that is available in two colors (black and blue) at a price of S / 1,279. In the following review you will learn about our experience using it, as well as its main positive and negative aspects.
Presentation and design
The Oppo A54 comes in a rather eye-catching box. On the front we have a first glimpse of the equipment, both from the rear and the front. The packaging also details its main technical specifications, as well as its color and accessories.
In addition to the cell phone, inside the box we find the charger, the type C cable, a headset with a microphone (which many brands stopped including), a transparent silicone case, the key for the SIM tray and the quick start guide.
This device has an average size (163.6 mm high, 75.7 wide and 8.4 mm thick) and thanks to its plastic finish it is quite light (192 grams), so you can use it with one hand without any problem.
The back of the Oppo A54 has a smooth finish that provides a very pleasant feeling to the touch. Unlike other phones in this segment, which tend to have opaque colors, this time we have a very bright and striking dark blue.
One problem that I have noticed is that fingerprints are very easily marked on the back of the device, so you will have to use a cloth to clean it regularly or use a protective case.
The inclusion of a fingerprint sensor on the right side it was a great success; however, there is one drawback that I did not like. It turns out that the volume buttons (which are usually above this sensor) placed them on the left.
Finally, it should be noted that, at the bottom, the Oppo A54 has a 3.5 mm jack port for traditional headphones, a microphone, a USB Type-C port and a single speaker. The SIM tray is on the left, above the volume buttons.
Screen
The kit comes with a 6.51 LCD screen inches with HD + resolution and a refresh rate of 60 Hz. Although it is not the best screen on the market, the truth is that it complies with providing an acceptable experience, especially to watch Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, among other streaming apps.
The Oppo A54 screen has several special functions. For example, the famous ‘dark mode’, which is activated very easily. It also has a mode called ‘Visual Comfort’ that reduces blue light from the screen and is ideal for reading.
Another option called ‘Screen color temperature’ allows us to choose between a warmer or a colder screen. We also have the automatic brightness function, which reduces (or increases) the brightness of the screen depending on the environment in which we find ourselves.
For example, if we are in a place with poor lighting, the brightness will be reduced without us noticing it. In case we are outdoors and under intense sunlight, the brightness will increase to the maximum so that we can correctly view the screen.
Finally, we must talk about the small hole that houses the front camera and is located in the upper left corner of the screen. Although it can be striking at first (especially if you watch videos in full screen), you get used to it quickly.
Security
Thanks to your side fingerprint sensor you will be able to unlock the Oppo A54 in a matter of seconds; However, it is advisable to do it with dry hands, since when they are wet, it does not recognize the fingerprint well or it takes a while to do so.
Although the smartphone allows you to add several fingerprints, it is advisable to only add two (one from each hand), since that way you will avoid accidentally unlocking the smartphone.
It should be noted that the equipment has the function of facial recognition that is, you can unlock it with your face, as long as your eyes are open. What I liked is that even if you’re in the dark, this feature works.
Performance and battery
The 128 GB of internal storage that the Oppo A54 has seems to me more than enough, besides that you can increase this memory with a microSD card; However the Mediatek Helio P35 processor and the 4 GB RAM They left a lot to be desired, as there were times when the team felt too slow.
Although most applications such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, among others, worked normally, there were others where this annoying ‘lag’ was noticeable. One of them was Facebook Messenger, especially if you were chatting with two people at the same time.
Another app I had trouble with was TikTok. From time to time, some of the videos posted on this platform would freeze and only the audio would play, this was fixed by moving forward to the next clip and going backwards.
As far as games go, I tried a few like Pokémon GO, Asphalt 9, Free Fire, Among Us, and Contra Returns. Although they take a while to open, you can enjoy it, there is even a tool that allows you to see the amount of FPS, as well as other interesting options.
One of the strengths of the Oppo A54 is its great 5,000 mAh battery. Although I thought it could last me more than a day, the truth is that around 9.00 pm or 10.00 pm it is already asking to charge its battery.
Although the team has 18W ‘fast charge’ It does not feel as fast as other smartphones that I have tested that, with a charge of less than fifteen minutes, you already have a few hours of use. In this case it is not like that, you will have to wait a long time.
Photography
The Oppo A54 has a triple rear camera that is composed of a 13 MP main lens a 2 MP macro lens and a 2 MP depth sensor It is used to take photos with a bokeh effect, that is, with a blurred background. The front camera, meanwhile, is 16 MP.
The photographs taken with this equipment have a fairly acceptable quality, especially those taken during the day. However, it is good to note that the presence of a wide-angle lens that allows much wider shots is missed.
Thanks to its 5X digital zoom you will be able to take pictures of objects that will be far away, although you must bear in mind that the photographs will have a slight photographic noise that will be more noticeable at night.
Finally, I would like to emphasize that the Oppo A54 It has two very redeemable video modes. The first is timelapse (or fast motion) and the second is slow motion.
