Research and academic innovation, tools to transform the world

Cutting-edge research and innovation are fundamental components for development and progress. They are the main way to generate new knowledge that allows the creation of technologies, processes, products and services that provide solutions to the main challenges and needs of our societies.

Higher education institutions have among their substantive functions to promote these activities that contribute to achieving necessary changes to improve the quality of life of people. For this reason, at the Universidad Iberoamericana, Unibe, research and innovation are priority aspects, with the creation and management of impact knowledge being one of its institutional axes.

“Any research and innovation activity is important because it generates knowledge, and the sum of its parts brings science into the hands of people to improve their quality of life,” says Dr. Aída Mencía-Ripley, Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation at Unibe. .

Since its foundation, the institution has worked to be a national benchmark in academic research, and in 2021 it created the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation with the aim of mainstreaming the generation of knowledge in the institution.

The university’s strategies in this regard are aligned with the sustainable development goals (SDGs). and the National Development Strategy, which represent the sustainability and survival needs for individuals and institutions in the world and in the country, respectively. As a result, all the projects that are managed from this vice-rector’s office stand out for their relevance and social impact.

One of them is the free mobile application Diabetes Azul, designed to help young people with type 1 diabetes to better manage their condition and maintain adequate metabolic control. With this app, users can select their usual meals from a list and identify the most suitable for their condition, calculate the amount of insulin required for their meal and to achieve adequate glycemia, among other functions. Developed entirely at Unibe with support from the National Fund for Innovation and Development (FONDOCYT), Diabetes Azul is a complementary tool in the treatment of diabetes indicated by the specialist doctor.

The Gestio’n Integral de Cl’nicas Odontologicas, GICO, medical data recording system is another high-impact project designed, developed and implemented by Unibe, also through FONDOCYT. GICO began to be used in the dental clinic of the university in May 2019 and since then it has facilitated the standardization, classification and management of diagnoses and treatments, it has improved the quality of care for the more than 2,500 patients who visit the clinic every month, as well as the training process of the students of the Unibe School of Dentistry.

Through its research, development and innovation platform, the university has obtained two invention patents, and has developed various technological innovation products.

Dr. Leandro Féliz-Matos, Dean of Innovation and Institutional Development, affirms that in its educational model “Unibe encourages creativity and innovation, generating processes at an individual and collective level. From these creation processes, different solutions are obtained to the problems of various sectors, such as academic, social, scientific, economic and business, among others. The solution of problems from innovation impacts social and sustainable development in the local and global context”.
