Santiago Hazim, director of Senasa: “Reducing the risks of diabetes requires continuous support from the First Level of Care”

Reduce the risk of a chronic non-communicable disease such as diabetes represents a contribution in the daily life of a person with this condition. However, to achieve this, the executive director of the National Health Insurance (SeNaSa), Dr. Santiago Hazimpoints out that First Level Care Centers are the key to continue improving the quality of medical care and life in their respective demarcations.

“Only in the first ten months of this year, according to data from the Department of Statistics and Research of SeNaSa, More than 60,000 people with a presumed diagnosis of diabetes in Contributory, Subsidized and Plan regimens received some type of medical care”, indicates Dr. Hazim.

He points out that these affiliates were offered more than half a million health services, with specialized consultations being the most demanded in the first place, outpatient services in second, followed by hospitalizations.

“This confirms what was said previously, the First Level Attention Centers guarantee us a follow-up to our affiliates. When a patient goes to his specialist, for example, he must have an accompaniment in the process, that is, that the person can have supervision that helps the patient to manage his condition without it getting worse and thus avoid, within of the circumstances that surround us, having to be hospitalized. In this way, prevention in health is worked on, ”he says.

Other elements, points out the executive director of SeNaSa, is that the average age of members with this condition is between 55 to 64 years in the first line; on a second scale there is an age group of 40 to 49 years old and in a third group they are from 60 to 74 years old, “in these groups and others, the SeNaSa Cuida de Ti, SeNaSa Contigo, Community Circles and health promotion programs.

It states that, within these statistics, females are the most affected with this disease.

It describes that from SeNaSa, programs have been developed for these affiliates and others who have some type of chronic non-communicable disease through the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Management, which contribute, as in the case of diabetes, to reduce the risk of developing diabetic neuropathies, neovascular glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, hyperglycemia, among others.

“The talks, orientations, workshops, group meetings and conferences that are carried out, through the First Level Care Centers, in the third level hospitals, directly with the members, at the SeNaSa service points or through the nine thousand providers that we have allow us to maintain a constant orientation towards our affiliates”, highlights the official.

It highlights that other benefits generated by this action is the integration of affiliates voluntarily to the programs that SeNaSa develops and executes throughout the year. “To be included you only have to have some health condition, belong to the Contributory Regime or pension plan, retirees and be of legal age. In the same way, if they are in the Subsidized you can approach our Service Points so that they can guide you about our programs”.
