Junior Lake hit a two-run RBI double and Andy Otero threw dominant baseball on Saturday for the Estrellas Orientales to defeat the Leones del Escogido 6-3 in a game of the Dominican winter baseball tournament, held at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium.
With the Stars trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, Lake started a rally that ended with four touchdowns, including RBIs by Christian Bethancourt and Micker Adolfo to make the game 4-1.
Elehuris Montero and Sanberg Pimentel also drove in one lap each, for the Stars, who reached 11 wins on the season.
Otero (1-0) pitched five 2/3 innings of six hits and a run to win for the Greens, who also had Henry Martínez, Yoan Aybar, Román Méndez and Wirfin Obispo on the mound for the ninth inning for get his seventh rescue of the season.
The Lions lost their 10th game of the season and just their second at home at Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium, where they are now 8-2.
Jimmy Paredes, Joe Dunand and Iván Castillo each produced one run for the Lions.
The loss went to David Kubiak (1-1) with a three-two-thirds innings of eight hits and four runs.
They remembered Julio Lugo
Before the game, the Ombudsman, Pablo Ulloa, launched the first ball and together with a group of former Major League Baseball players paid tribute to Julio Lugo, who died earlier this week from a heart attack.
Octavio Dotel, Miguel Batista, Rubén Mateo, Quilvio Veras, Esteban Germán and Neifi Pérez participated in the ceremony, dressed in black shirts and white letters with Lugo’s name on the chest.
Lugo was an important part of the Leones del Escogido and the team has paid tribute to his former torpedo since his death.
