‘Tata’ Martino confirmed that he will not continue as DT of Mexico after being eliminated from Qatar 2022

Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino he will not continue as DT of the Mexican team after failing to qualify for the round of 16 of the Qatar 2022 World Cup. “We assume the failure we had in this World Cup. I am responsible for this disappointment that we have today. My contract with the Mexican Soccer Federation (FMF) ended when the referee ended the match.” he declared at a press conference.

Despite beating Saudi Arabia in the last game of group C, El Tri was left without a ticket to the next phase due to goal difference. This is the first time that Mexico has gone in the first round of the World Cup since 1994.

Martino, who took the Aztec team diver in January 2019, was harshly criticized by the fans and a sector of the sports press in the northern country due to the role of his team at the international level.

Their recent failures in the latest editions of the League of Nations and the Concacaf Gold Cup were the main target of questioning, as well as the last leg suffered in the qualifiers.

In spite of everything, the ‘Tata’ thanked the labor freedom on the part of the directors of the FMF. “Since I arrived, I have worked with complete freedom, without any interference from anyone. I thank the president and the sports directors for that, ”he indicated.

At the moment it has not been confirmed who will take the place of the Argentine coach in the coming years, in which Mexico will not play any qualifying process as it is one of the hosts of the 2026 World Cup together with the United States and Canada.
