arlette rujel and Maryori Morán, former candidates for Miss Peru 2022, have just won the international pageants Reina Hispanoamérica 2023 and Miss Mesoamerica 2023, respectively. Curiously, 25 years ago, a totally opposite situation occurred, when two national representatives were sent to the same beauty contest without obtaining any crown, just when, for the first time, Peru was chosen as the host country of the Miss World Beach 1998.

What happened to Miss Peru Playa 1998?
In 1998 an unprecedented event occurred in the history of Peruvian beauty pageants. The jury of Miss Peru Playa 1998 could not agree to choose a queen who would represent the country in the Miss World Beach 1998. Young models representing the different national spas participated in the event that had as finalists Raquel Perez-Quevedo Jordan, representative of Huanchaco (La Libertad); and Maria Fernanda Olazo Cassinelli, representative of Las Delicias (Trujillo).
Both candidates reached a tie, and although the jury repeated the vote three times, the same score was obtained and a queen was not designated. The organization of the event, in charge of the businesswoman Carmen Amelia Ampuero Mosquetti (Miss Universe Peru 1972), decided that both should wear the sash and crown of Miss Peru Playa 1998.
