This is how Millennial Astrology was born: the time Esteban Madrigal left architecture to grow on Instagram

“I was thinking of ladies, angels, patchouli and tarot.” Stephen Madrigal He is an Aries (April 9) who five years ago looked at the astrology under the lens of the stereotype because his life was already shaped: he was advancing in the ranks of architecture with a schedule from 8 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon and he worked in a ‘very cool’ work environment. “I liked the romantic part —the color theory, the aesthetic— and I ended up studying that career,” he confesses. To the formula that seemed unequivocal, however, was added an esoteric and silent component, almost hidden at the beginning: Millennial Astrology.

“I was very afraid that people would know that I was on the internet talking about astrology. The first eight months I didn’t even go out. It was an anime.” remember the 33-year-old Mexican-American who is now capable of even appearing in a music video: “At 3”, by Paty Cantú and León Leiden.

—But how did you get involved with astrology?

—I became a habitual reader of the horoscope (…). As time passed, a random friend’s mom was an astrologer and she was about to start a workshop. The worst thing that could happen to me was that the second month I said no, especially since I am a multi-passionate person (…). After the first class I returned to my house very ecstatic; So, from there I trained with that astrologer and, later, in a self-taught way. My study time went from two to ten hours a week.”

In the search for a virtual catalog to nourish his capacity for wonder, Esteban noticed the extremes: the astrology starring the square of the Moon in opposition to Mars —“Güey, I’m not there yet”, he thought— and that disseminated in accounts of memes. “The need to share arose,” he recalls. Millennial Astrology was born.

—Would you practice architecture again?

—More than just going back to architecture, I often wonder if I wanted to start other types of things; but, definitely, astrology fascinates me so much that no: there is no time to do anything else. I appreciate what I took from architecture, but astrology is a passion that fills me with gasoline every day.

—Another major twist was moving from Mexico to the United States.

I also made that decision in favor of Millennial Astrology (…). The great Mexico City was where every content creator had to go to exploit what he had. I thought: “If I go to Mexico City, I can do a lot of interesting things, but this whole world of ‘we invite you here and do this collaboration’ will also eat me up. But where is my training going to be? And where will my community be? (…) Yes, I think that’s when the numbers go to your head. It is this important concept that I struggle with every time I am interviewed: Am I an astrologer and content creator?

“Which weighs more for you?”

“For me, astrologer.” Content creation is something that gives me the tools to be able to make a living from what I’m passionate about, and I love it too! I love to create! I mean, I’m not fighting on that side, but I always have to take more care of the part of I am an astrologer.

—An astrologer who has published a book and works with Netflix. How did you do it?

“It’s all very crazy!” The publisher (Penguin Random House) approached me and offered me the possibility of publishing the first book. just called “Millennial Astrology. Finding your story in the stars” because I believe that this is how my path has gone, how I have found my purpose, my brilliance and my way of being (…). For an architect, the greatest moment of achievement for him is when the design and plans are transferred to a physical house. I never managed to get to that because my work was more related to real estate, contracts, negotiations… And I think that Millennial Astrology gave me the gift of being able to materialize something that I had dreamed of in something physical, like the book.

“What about Netflix?”

“Everything was gradual. I started working with different brands, and each campaign breaks it because it’s a genuine way to connect with the stars. When Netflix came up I felt like a bastard. He gave me the first series (“Through my window”) and it was complex to put into astrology and, then, the universe gave me the tools again: the protagonists were called Helios, Ares and Hermes; that is, they were the Greek gods. I made them a proposition and said (to Netflix members), “Trust me.” Since then we have not let go of each other’s hands: week after week we use astrology to be able to send the message of everything great that is on that platform. I, today, call myself the resident astrologer on Netflix (laughs).

During an old podcast, Esteban had innocently winked at this title: “Netflix, if you’re listening to this, book me.” He did not remember it, but his audience sent him the clip and he dusted off the demonstration: “I remembered that it was a dream of mine. It was a circle, really.”

“And what do you dream of now?”

—My dream continues to be the same as I have dreamed of in the last nine years: to have a peaceful life. Now I add this: in which I can continue living from astrology. May this continue and grow; but not from the side of ambition, but from what I’m passionate about.

His red, sometimes purple, sometimes yellow turban gives him solemnity and reinforces his walk as an icon —’superstar’, according to the characteristics of Aries— every time he has the mission of signing his texts: “May the stars be with you today and always. Your head astrologer, Esteban Madrigal”, writes. She mentally does it to the rhythm of “Part of him”, the soundtrack of “The little Mermaid” —”Hijole, I’m going to like him because he’s very trendy,” he jokes—.
