U-17 World Cup Peru 2023: President of the IPD is confident of meeting deadlines to recover the Elías Aguirre stadium

The president of the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD), Maximo Perez Zevallos inspected the Elías Aguirre stadium in Chiclayo, considered to be the venue for the U-17 world championship to be held in Peru in 2023.

The head of the highest sports body at the national level said that despite the fact that in the Elias Aguirre Stadium There are a number of aspects to correct in terms of infrastructure, it is possible to meet the deadlines to finish the work with a view to next year’s World Cup.

“Perhaps, the time it takes to correct this infrastructure (it could be an observation so that the headquarters is not available), but according to our technicians it is possible that it will be done within the time required by the FIFA”, indicated Máximo Pérez Zevallos to The Republic.

The sports authority was accompanied by representatives from the area of infrastructure and investment of the IPD.

“All this space at Elías Aguirre lends itself to achieving the goal. We only expect the FIFA certification to be able to work. Our technical staff has observed that here there is a lot of possibility to do (the infrastructure for the World Cup), added Pérez Zevallos.

For its part, the regional governor of Lambayeque, Luis Diaz Bravo who accompanied the president of the IPD, considered that the investment in the Elías Aguirre stadium would be 50,000,000 soles.

This amount would include the change of synthetic grass for a hybrid pitch (90% natural grass and 10% synthetic); in addition to the luminaires of the towers for artificial lighting and the roof of the western grandstand (which must be demolished so that a metal structure with canvas can be installed).

Improvements are required in the infrastructure of the eastern stand, where there is a problem of water seepage and walls invaded by humidity and saltpeter. This inconvenience only occurs in the old eastern grandstand, which was kept for the 2004 Copa América and 2005 U-17 World Cup.

There are other issues to improve such as the isolation of access for delegations, so that they do not have contact with the public, which is one of FIFA’s requirements.

Precisely, a FIFA commission will visit the venues in the coming days to make a final decision.
