The end of the Closing Tournament is getting closer and there are six teams that are in the fight. Universitario and Sporting Cristal are two of them and this Sunday, October 9, they will meet in an advanced final. The sky-blues must win to continue at the top of the table; however, a loss or draw would not affect their standing much.
The creams are going through a different situation, they must win to continue in the fight. Those led by Carlos Compagnucci are third with 27 units, but they still need to rest. For this reason, Universitario needs to win all the remaining games, starting with the match against the Celestes, a task that will not be easy, since they have not been beaten for a couple of years. How long has it been since the last cream win? In this note we tell you.
To remember Universitario’s last victory against Sporting Cristal, we have to go back to 2018. On that occasion, the creams managed to turn the game around the Rimenses and won 2-1 at the Monumental Stadium. The side of the Peruvian team Marcos López was in charge of opening the scoring; however, Alberto Quintero and Germán Denis appeared, who gave the victory to the ‘U’, who was fighting not to descend.
Nevertheless, If we refer to the last victory of the ‘U’ against La Florida playing on the road, we have to go back to 2016. On that occasion, Ate’s men won by the slightest difference (1-0) thanks to a great goal from a chalaca by Edison Flores. In that season, Universitario won the Opening Tournament.
Both teams have met in 217 official matches. In the first of them, which was dated September 30, 1956, they ended up equaling 2-2. The balance is favorable for Universitario, since it has 75 wins, while Sporting Cristal reaches 67 wins.
The biggest win in these clashes was a 4-0 favorable for Rimenses in the 1988 and 2013 seasons. While Universitario also achieved an equal score in the 1989 Copa Libertadores.
The modern classic Sporting Cristal vs. Universitario will be played this Sunday, October 9 at the National Stadium. The meeting is scheduled for 3:30 pm (Peruvian time).
