Walkie: the 27-year-old Russian rapper who took his own life to avoid going to war in Ukraine

A well-known Russian rapper committed suicide to avoid going to war in Ukraine. “I have no right to pull the trigger,” Ivan Vitalievich Petunin, known as Walkie, said in a video posted before he took his own life in the city of Krasnodar. He was 27 years old.

The young man decided to commit suicide before he was summoned to join the military forces of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who two weeks ago called up 300,000 reservists and put all of Russia on a war footing.

“If you are watching this video, I am no longer alive. I can’t take the sin of murder on my soul, I don’t want to,” the artist said in the video.

The recording has shocked the world due to the sad outcome of the young man, who had just released a music album just a few days ago.

Petunin was born on May 24, 1995 and dedicated his life to developing his artistic career as a rapper.

Like many in this field, he became known for his ability to improvise in the so-called “rooster battles” and after years in the environment he released his album in 2018 under the title “Psíquico”.

In the early hours of this September 30, Ivan Petunin, who a few years ago came to serve in his country’s army, posted the video on Telegram.

“It seems to me that in the next few days, partial mobilization will turn into full mobilization,” he said, referring to fears that Putin’s partial mobilization could turn into mass recruitment, in a context where it is claimed that Moscow plans to call to 1 million men to reinforce his troops in the Ukraine.

“I have two arms, two legs, an index finger to pull the trigger of a machine gun and some will not win,” he said.

On his decision he abounded: “I have no right to pull the trigger. I am not willing to take up arms and kill my own. Forgive me all those who love me, but sometimes your principles have to die. And the last one anyway.”

“My final decision is exactly how I am going to die. I choose to remain forever in history, as someone who has not supported what is happening and to make a final protest.

According to foreign media, Walkie was found dead near a high-rise building in Krasnodar, a city in southwestern Russia along the Kuban River.

Five days ago he had published his latest musical material along with other rappers from the Russian scene.

However, in the video he also invites you to listen to his new album released on Friday. “Listen to some of these songs to understand what kind of person I was,” she said.

“Guys, our video is available. We worked so hard on it that we missed the deadline a bit, but the result is worth it. I would love your retweets,” Walkie wrote on Twitter.

After the sad outcome became known, his girlfriend posted an Instagram story in which she wrote: “Everything happened unexpectedly. I think he will always be a bright, kind guy who loved to joke around, even when he was downright sad.”
